In the Windy Weatherfoot episode above, This Butterfly Needs Help, Windy learns how planting native flowers can protect these magical butterflies. And now you can help too!
Why Helping Monarchs Matters
Monarch populations have dropped because of habitat loss, climate stress, and fewer native plants. But when kids like you plant even one flower, you help rebuild the “nectar trail” Monarchs depend on.
By planting native flowers, you join Generation Preservation™ — kids who are good-natured and good to nature.
Monarch butterflies are important for a healthy world because they help flowers grow, keep nature in balance, and show us how well our planet is doing.
Monarch butterflies are some of the most amazing migrating insects on Earth. Every year, they travel thousands of miles—and they need our help to make the journey safely.
What Monarchs Need to Survive
During migration, Monarch butterflies look for native plants to rest, eat, and lay their eggs. When these plants disappear, Monarchs struggle. Planting Monarch-friendly flowers is one of the easiest and most powerful ways kids and families can support nature.
Plant a Monarch-Friendly Garden
You don’t need a big yard. A pot, porch, or school planter works!
Must-Have Plants for Monarchs (BE SURE to plant native plants to where you live or else it's not good for the butterflies or other animal friends):
- Milkweed (the ONLY plant Monarch moms lay eggs on!)
- Asters
- Goldenrod
- Purple Coneflower
- Black-Eyed Susans
- Zinnias
These flowers give Monarchs the nectar energy they need to keep flying on their long migration.
Create a Butterfly Rest Stop
Help Monarchs by offering:
- Native flowers
- A shallow water dish
- Sunny stones for warming wings
- 🚫 No pesticides (they are not healthy for anyone, including you)
Even a small rest stop can help a tired butterfly continue its journey.
