Why do leaves change color in fall? (Explained for kids) π
All summer long, leaves are full of chlorophyll, a green color that helps trees make food from sunlight. In fall, the chlorophyll breaks down, and the yellow and orange colors that were hiding in the leaf all along finally get to shine.
Some trees, like maples, also make red and purple colors in the fall, and a chilly first frost can make those reds even brighter. Just like Lief, every leaf lets its true colors shine!
Easy fall leaf activities for preschoolers π
- Leaf color hunt: Find a red, an orange, and a gold leaf, just like the colors in the song.
- Leaf rainbow: Line up your leaves from green to red and see the change happen.
- Sing and stomp: Play Be Lief and dance through a crunchy leaf pile.
- Leave some leaves: Fallen leaves give little critters a cozy place to rest in winter.
